Kasim Abid biography
Kasim Abid is a cameraman, director and producer of Iraqi origin. He holds a Diploma in Arts (Theatre/Cinema Section) from the Institute of Fine Arts, Baghdad and an MA from the Moscow Film Institute VGIK, and lives in London since 1982.
He worked as a cameraman on many documentary films like (“Iraqi women voices from exile”, “Tasting freedom”, “Justice for Joy”, “Nana”, “The little flute player”) for Channel 4, the BBC and other British satellite TV stations.
For six years he worked for Arab satellite TV stations as the head of Documentary programmes at the Arab channel MBC, and as the head of the camera department at ANN.
He produced and directed “Amid the alien corn” in 1991 which was screened to great reviews on Britain’s leading domestic TV, Channel 4.
“Naji al-Ali – an artist with vision” was produced and directed by Kasim in 1999. This powerful documentary on the life and work of assassinated Palestinian artist Naji Al-Ali brought him critical acclaim.
“Surda check point” in 2005 conveys the rhythm of life at the Israeli Army check point at Surda in Palestine.
His latest film “Life After The Fall” 2008 is about a Baghdad family and the massive changes in their lives, since the fall of Saddam’s regime in 2003.
Kasim also teaches documentary film and TV production in the United Kingdom, Jordan, Iraqi Kurdistan, Syria and Palestine.
In 2003, in co-operation with his colleagues, Kasim founded an Independent Film and TV College in Baghdad (IFTVC), where he conducts media training for young Iraqi film-makers. Under his guidance students produced elevens short documentary films, with several of them being awarded prizes at international film festivals.
In March of 2005, Kasim Abid was awarded the Award for Excellence in Arts by Britain’s (The Muslim News newspaper).
